A Fresh Start for Queensland: Bribie Satellite Hospital to be renamed Satellite Health Centre
The Crisafulli Government has delivered on a key commitment from its 100 Day Plan, renaming Queensland’s ‘Satellite Hospitals’ to ‘Satellite Health Centres’—a move designed to prevent confusion and better reflect the services these facilities provide.
The renaming follows overwhelming feedback from frontline clinicians, with concerns raised that the previous name misled patients into believing they could receive emergency hospital care.
Member for Pumicestone, Ariana Doolan, welcomed the change, saying it was a necessary step to ensure residents clearly understood the services available at Bribie Island’s facility.
“This is about making sure our community has access to the right healthcare, in the right place, at the right time,” Ms Doolan said.
“Our Bribie Island Satellite Health Centre will continue to offer essential same-day, walk-in services for minor injuries and outpatient care, but this new name makes it clear what people can expect.”
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the renaming was a critical step in addressing the risks caused by the previous government’s misleading name for the facilities.
“The Queensland Audit Office found more than 3,500 patients with life-threatening conditions last year presented to these centres, expecting hospital-level care that they could not receive,” Minister Nicholls said.
“We have listened to the experts and adopted the recommended name of Satellite Health Centres, ensuring Queenslanders know these facilities provide minor injury and outpatient care.”
The change was supported by a clinical advisory group, including representatives from all seven locations: Caboolture, Redlands, Ripley, Tugun, Kallangur, Eight Mile Plains, and Bribie Island.
The Bribie Island Satellite Health Centre will continue delivering high-quality care, supported by dedicated nurses, medical officers, and allied health professionals.
